Writing on the concrete wall of the bridge exhibits the river levels from a very heavy flood in 2005, nicely above the present level of the river and it nearly certainly would have engulfed the trail totally. The second Roads Board Office was on the block next to the current Shire constructing. It was a small one room corrugated ad wood constructing which served its function till the Board was able to secure the old Bank of WA constructing in the middle Sixties which was then coverted to the current day Shire constructing. The old hospital was changed in1974 with a transportable constructing which was changed in 2003 with a modern, state of the art constructing.
Standing at 19m (but 56m above sea level; what a view from the top!), the word ‘leeuwin’ means ‘lioness’, so named after the Dutch vessel that chartered the coast in 1622. This was doubtless the first European ship to sail Australia’s south-west. Based on West Australian creator Dianne Wolfer’s book Lighthouse Girl, it uses the true story of Faye Howe with Wolfer recreating the period of Australian history 1914 to 1918 from the attitude of a young lady. The book received WA Young Reader Book in 2010 and was shortlisted for 2 Premier’s Book Awards. Watson’s mother, Fay Catherine Howe was simply fifteen when she stood on the island signalling to the departing WWI fleet in morse code and postcards came again addressed to ‘The little woman on Breaksea Island’.
There is only low-lying scrub vegetation across Breaksea Island and it’s bordered by steep rock edges, making it almost unimaginable to access by boat. The restoration works at Breaksea Island have only simply commenced, with scaffolding rigged around the whole structure and work happening on the inner staircase. Visitors can get pleasure from a coffee or delicious mild refreshments in the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse Cafe.
Further alongside the shoreline of Esperance town, discover the wonders of Twilight Beach, featuring the long-lasting ‘rock with a hole,’ and uncover the tranquillity of Blue Haven Beach. Surfing enthusiasts can deal with reef breaks at West Beach, Fourth Beach, or Observatory Beach, whereas fishing fanatics can cast their traces at Bandy Creek Harbour. There are numerous strolling trails, viewing platforms and lookouts. The Old Convict Gaol provides a glance again to the era of convicts within the mid-1800s. It now operates as a museum, home to relics from WW1 and WW2, in addition to artefacts from authentic settlers and the early aboriginal group. Surrounded by 4-metre stone walls, the gaol includes a Great Hall, warders’ quarters and cells, around a central courtyard with a hiring depot within the centre. Albany due to this fact is the oldest colonial settlement in the west – predating the Swan River colony of Perth/Fremantle by over two years.
Continue on to Amelup and – should you haven’t eaten already – seize lunch on the Bluff Knoll Cafe. Then head for the wheatbelt towns of Borden, Ongerup and on to the numerous landscapes of Jerramungup Shire. Head north-east in the path of Nannup, the gateway to WA’s Southern Forests and its tracts of karri, tingle and other old progress timber.
The damage clearly reveals the building was previously four room with a central hallway. It is a random stone construction with brick across the doors and home windows. The exterior partitions have been rendered and the interior walls present proof of being plastered. The location of the building in a comparatively remote and inaccessible place has meant it has been largely untouched by vandals, however does make it extra weak to the elements. This story offered inspiration for Albany author Dianne Wolfer in her popular 2010 children’s e-book Lighthouse Girl.
The town hall clock was not put in for a number of years and on the fifteenth April, 1891 at 3pm, the clock started maintaining time for the townspeople. The Albany Town Hall was an important civic constructing and on the bottom flooring was offices and a public hall on the first floor that may host group events corresponding to city meetings, occasions, theatre and dances. Stan recalls his recollections aboard his yacht ‘Kestrel’ servicing lighthouses on Eclipse and Breaksea islands close to Albany. The subsequent section can be to complete inner fixtures so the buildings have been suitable for occupation. The lighthouses and extensions have been restored externally to stabilise and preserve the integrity of the structures. Before the Pantagenet Battery was constructed throughout the ocean facet of Mount Adelaide stretching through the Mount Clarence Parklands right down to King Point, an important guardian of the Channel was the Lighthouse.
